Helen walked out of Shield Securities, taking a moment to scan the car park in search of Lexi’s Mini. The space it had occupied earlier was now empty. She’d planned on cooking tonight but wanted to check with Lexi before going shopping. Unfortunately, Lexi had been locked in some weird “Red Team/Blue Team” meeting, unreachable all day. She unlocked her car, slipping her keys into the ignition as she dialled Lexi’s mobile. She waited till the answerphone message kicked in before hanging up. Sitting back in her seat, she waited a moment to see if Lexi would call her back. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a figure passing, and glanced up. It was Shelby passing by the end of the row of cars further down. Lexi had said there was something off about her. She’d even caught her going through someone’s desk. Now, Helen scrutinised the woman on her walk towards the riverbank that edged the car park. Some of her co-workers used the bench that had been installed to have their lunch.

Helen knew from getting acquainted with the area that the footpath was a shortcut to a bus stop on this side of the technology park. A beech hedge provided some shelter, or maybe a place to hide from the boss. Helen’s position to one side of an opening in the hedge gave her a clear view of the bench. As Shelby approached the footpath, she pulled out an envelope from her backpack, dropping it in the waste bin next to the bench. Interesting. Why would Shelby suddenly decide to throw something away after leaving an office with a perfectly good waste bin?

Helen pulled the keys back out of the ignition, intrigued. She was about to check out what Shelby had thrown away when she saw another figure approaching from the opposite direction. Helen could only see his head due to the height of the hedge. She quickly pulled out her phone, switching from camera mode in order to film whoever appeared in the hedge gap. A small white dog appeared first, then the figure of a man in his thirties. He was dark haired and smartly dressed. He hesitated as he passed the bin. Bingo. Helen waited patiently, trying to focus the camera a little more sharply on his actions as he scoped the area before pulling the envelope from the bin. He slipped it inside his jacket and turned around to walk back the way he came.

Helen clicked off the camera. So maybe young Shelby was passing on trade secrets to competitors. Why else would she conduct such an elaborate drop right outside her workplace? She needed to talk to Lexi before passing the information higher up. It’s not like they could retrieve the information now, but maybe they could prevent it from happening again.
